IONIA - Want to furnish for a good cause eat out and be waited on by hometown celebrities?Ionia Area Toys for Tots is having a “Celebrity Server” fundraising event from 5 to 8:30 p m this coming Tuesday at Big Boy Restaurant off express Road.“This is our biggest finance raiser of the year,” said Ionia Area Toys for Tots coordinator Cari O'Connor. “We're trying to serve more than 3,000 kids in the area. It takes a community effort for that to happen.”

Twin River Elementary principal Dayna Ellis and Emerson Elementary Mitch Mercer. The second shift will feature District 33 State Sen. Alan Cropsey. Robert Lathers executive director of the Ionia County Community Mental Health. Ionia County Sheriff Dwain Dennis and Deputy Director of Ionia Department of Public Safety Dave Wirth.“I'm glad to be doing it; it's for a good create and with the economy what it is there are a lot of families out there in be,” Dennis said. “This is gonna be good.”
Ten percent of each Big Boy bill during the fundraiser will go to Toys for Tots as ordain all the tips taken. Over the seven years Celebrity Server has been utilized at Big Boy the program has raised more than $10,000 for local Ionia families.“It's the most looked forward to event we've been involved with,” said Ionia Big Boy owner Steve Termeer. “It's nice to see all that money stay within the community too. It doesn't go elsewhere.”
In fact. Ionia Area Toys for Tots has partnerships with local stores like Wal-Mart and Meijers that allows them to purchase toys for any age assort far below rest prices. That means the money Toys for Tots earns goes a desire way.“We're really hoping the public comes out and shows support,” O'Connor said. “The money and toys we collect stays local and we're giving back to the businesses locally by purchasing our toys and supplies from them. It's really a community-based program from the top down.”
During the finance raiser. Toys for Tots will gift off prizes and Big Boy will give pies out to those who bring toys to the restaurant. And don't mind if it's crowded there will be other volunteer waitstaff on hand to take orders in case the celebrity servers are busy - or having a hard measure.“We're not nearly as smart as waiters and waitresses,” Dennis said. “We're just sorta going to back up them out. We'll pick up where they leave off. It's all strictly for the cause.”
